During December your self care may be put aside to deal with the busyness of the season, but with the colder weather and increased stress of the holidays you need more self care to ease your body, mind and spirit through to January. Physically the colder weather has an impact on your movement, muscles and joints. In order to maintain a constant core temperature the body may lessen circulation to extremities which can leave them feeling stiff, sore, cold and less mobile. OR, you may be using different muscle groups as you shovel snow or adjust your walking gait to avoid slipping. Even the skin is impacted by colder weather and can often need extra hydration. What does it mean to harvest holistic health? The awareness of connection of how you function as a whole being is often brought to light during a Massage. Clients will often notice that releasing muscle tension in one area has an impact on other muscles. It's always rewarding when they realize that they are not just a collection of parts. Once a hard core vegetarian from the time I was 13, I've had the opportunity to discover some fabulous recipes. No longer hard core (I do eat some chicken for the protein) but most of the time my meals are vegetarian. Here are 2 of my favourites for you to try (Sorry, I have had the recipes so long I no longer know the original sources. But the original cooks created really delicious recipes!) There is a reason that many refer to the month of September as 'Stresstember'. We all go through changes galore and if there is one thing that we don't tend to enjoy it's change!
It’s happened, September is here and the days are shortening, will soon grow cooler, and the season to gather and harvest is upon us. Trees will soon begin to release that which they no longer need and nature will become quieter and turn inward. Some nickname this month Stresstember because of all of the changes that it brings, all around us. Holidays ending, darker skies, school beginning, leaves changing colours and falling… a somewhat abrupt end to the laid back days and a theme of busyness casts its shadow.

We had the most interesting experience yesterday, a client and I. During a Craniosacral Therapy session my client displayed, in real time, a response from the Vagus Nerve. It was pretty amazing to be a part of! Stress in it's chronic or acute stages can be debilitating to mind, body and spirit. The changes it creates in the body can lead to emotional responses of depression and anxiety.
As World Environment Day approaches (June 5th) I find myself once again taking stock of where else my business can take steps to reduce it's impact upon the environment. Let's face it, in my line of work I do A LOT of laundry! And the hot water washes, lots of rinsing and the energy of drying are not environmentally friendly. I use to have a clothes line outside and loved the smell of the freshly hung sheets as they were unfolded onto the Massage table. Unfortunately I don't have that clothes line any longer. |
