How many Craniosacral Sessions will I need and how often should I come? (for adults)
As with any holistic modality a lot depends on how your body responds to a session. The benefit of Craniosacral Therapy is that, in working with and listening to what the body directs as priority, resolution of issues often moves more quickly.
If you are attending a session for something specific (such as concussion) then generally the number of sessions ranges from 2 to 8 (and 8 would be an unusually high number!). What I generally find with clients is 3 or 4 appointments are the usual if clients are also participating. What does that mean? IF...
- You are using your time during the session to relax as much as possible and allowing tensions to release (this can be difficult for some, I realize that you may need a session or two to just get to know me and develop trust. I honour that),
- You are hydrating before, during and after your sessions,
- You are doing some of the self-help homework that I share, in between sessions,
- and if sessions are no more than 1 week apart
So much can be determined at the 2nd session. It will show both you and I what has stayed in the way of changes made during the 1st appointment. I recommend booking 3 to 4 sessions ahead to ensure that the time slots are available. Appointments can always be canceled if not needed. A follow up after a few months is always a good idea.
Of course there are often layers to healing. The body may wish to shed the physical pain and tensions first before delving into the nervous system issues caused by trauma or injury. It’s important to honour those layers of healing and allow it to happen as your body, mind and spirit are ready to.
In discovering that more clients are choosing Craniosacral Therapy as their regular, maintenance bodywork session instead of other modalities, I find once or twice a month is what most choose, depending on what they are working with. You know yourself best and know when you need maintenance. I would always recommend a client come for 2 or 3 weekly sessions to resolve anything that is standing out to be addressed, and then after that shift into maintenance. In working through those 2 to 3 weekly sessions tensions and pain rarely slip back to what they were but instead, through maintenance, the body, mind and spirit remain in the great baseline created by the weekly sessions.
When it comes to specific workings to prepare for any mouth work or device fittings, Craniosacral Therapy is excellent for releasing tensions that are often held in the face, jaw and neck. Usually 2 to 3 sessions are helpful in creating ease through these areas. These sessions may include very gentle techniques both inside and outside the mouth dependent on which areas are holding tension. Please read more about Intraoral trauma informed care
When preparing for any kind of surgery, 3 sessions in advance are likely to encourage areas of tension to relax. You never know what your body will release and how those shifts may heal. It’s equally important to book for after surgery to assist with easing any pain or trauma to the body, especially the nervous system, and aid in the healing process.
