Massage, Holistic Therapies and the Environment

As World Environment Day approaches (June 5th) I find myself once again taking stock of where else my business can take steps to reduce it's impact upon the environment.

​Let's face it, in my line of work I do A LOT of laundry! And the hot water washes, lots of rinsing and the energy of drying are not environmentally friendly. I use to have a clothes line outside and loved the smell of the freshly hung sheets as they were unfolded onto the Massage table. Unfortunately I don't have that clothes line any longer.

Women's Health - Bloating

​From a Massage Therapy or holistic therapy point of view bloating is seen as a symptom of something happening in the body. For example: a symptom of PMS and Menopause may include bloating, indigestion or inflammation in the colon may produce bloating. Regardless of the reason for the symptom, holistic health looks at the whole picture and works to reduce bloating through addressing the cause, while also reducing the discomfort that bloating can bring.

​One of the best applications is abdominal massage. A practice well worth having your massage therapist give while also teaching you how to self massage at home. Abdominal massage can assist air or gas to move through the colon to be released, while helping to reduce inflammation, ease pain and improve digestion. It is a gentler form of massage where the organs between the ribs and pelvis are treated.

While the benefits of abdominal massage include improved digestion and relief of constipation it also assists in regulating metabolic function and reducing the build-up of wastes in the body. The feeling of abdominal bloating often comes about when our metabolism is impeded and wastes are not being released as they should.

Reflexology is another form of therapy that can work on the nerve endings in the feet that correspond to bloating due to gas. Adults and colicky babies alike respond really well to having that part of their foot treated.

We're closing in on "that" time of year again...colder weather, kids back in school, more time spent indoors and those wretched cold and flu bugs begin to circulate. Before the germs and viruses become too prevalent is the optimal time to think about strengthening your immune system.

The germs and bugs will still be around, however, with a strong and resilient immune system your body is in a better position to defend itself from becoming sick.

How Can Massage Help?

There is an ever growing body of research that supports the benefits of Massage Therapy for the Immune System, especially during the winter months. Here are some reasons why regular treatments strengthen your immunity:
  • Massage increases the activity of your white blood cells, the cells in your body responsible for combating viruses.
  • Massage decreases cortisol, the stress hormone. High stress levels, whether physical or emotional, can lead to lack of sleep, depression and anxiety which often suppress our Immune System's response.
  • Increased levels of Dopamine and Seratonin help to reduce anxiety and the release of these chemicals increases with Massage.
  • Massage helps to decrease inflammation and cytokine secretion which has a direct impact in reducing symptoms of asthma, depression and diseases of the cardiovascular system.

When it comes to strengthening your immune system regular massage becomes a necessity rather than a luxury as it increases both your physical and mental well-being.

When is it Too Late?

A number of clients will book an appointment when suffering from a cold or the flu in the belief that it will help them to feel better. The truth is that a Massage will spread the virus and will very likely make you feel worse.
If the cold or flu has already hit, your body needs to rest, not have a muscular work out.

Our mind/body/spirit connection is never more obvious than when we’re in a state of anxiety. Fear driven thoughts may bring forward a biochemical response in your body (fast pulse, dry mouth, nausea, shallow breathing, dizziness), and your mind views these symptoms as evidence that something is definitely wrong.

Developing grounding and mindful movement “tricks” can help to reduce anxiety, more quickly bringing you to a physical and emotional sense of calmness. Practicing some of these, while not in a state of anxiety, may help you to more quickly remember these tips when you feel anxiety coming on.

Over coffee with colleagues a few weeks ago in which we share holistic health ideas, our conversation turned to our clients and how many of them are feeling a lot of anxiety lately. Anxiety about finances, relationships, health issues, family, etc. But what seems most prevalent is a deep anxiety about feeling a lack of power in their lives to deal with the issues that are making them anxious, that they feel out of control.

Anxiety can impact upon many aspects of our physical and emotional self; digestive problems, trouble sleeping or waking up tired, lack of energy and drive, mental confusion, body aches and pains, headaches, muscle tension, depression, sadness, anger …  When we ignore or don’t acknowledge that we’re anxious it takes its toll.

Magnesium in June

Holistic and natural health practitioners are discovering more and more that clients are magnesium deficient. I experience this with clients often, especially lately.
