Clients have heard me say this often after their sessions with me, especially after Massage. The main reason behind this "after session" advice is that it extends the benefits of your session after you return home. But there's more... Why Drink Extra Water Before and After Your Massage? Massage is a workout for the muscles. Similiar to when you exercise, Massage can dehydrate muscle and that can cause pain and cramping if left unchecked. It's a natural to have your water bottle with you when you work out and it should be the same for before and after your Massage. Keeping hydrated is important for all of your organs, including muscles. Why Have A Hot Soak in the Tub After Your Massage? Muscles love hot, moist heat! As the heat penetrates the muscles any residual pain from the workout of Massage eases. Soaking in the tub also feels good to arthritic joints. It's a great segue from day to sleep, as anxiety and tension is eased, a good night sleep is just on the horizon. Why add Epsom Salts to Bath Water? Epsom salts contain the naturally derived minerals of Magnesium and Sulfate. When you dissolve them into your Bathtub water they are more readily absorbed through the skin. Magnesium is great for easing muscle aches and spasms while reducing inflammation. My Bath Time Rituals During a work day I use my muscles alot as I share sessions with clients. Soaking in the tub at the end of the day has become a peaceful sanctuary for me, where I make that transition from work to a quiet evening. I know the benefits of the hot water and epsom salts for my hardworking muscles. I also know the stress busting benefits to taking that self care time for myself. It's something that I can easily do everyday. While I add Epsom Salts most days to my bath water I may also add calming essential oils or burn scented candles. Music, tea, a glass of wine, a good book are also part of my ritual so that I ease tension physically and mentally.
