Craniosacral Therapy ~ The Power of Stillness

2/12/2023

Calm the nervous system with Craniosacral Therapy
During a Craniosacral Therapy session there is a Stillpoint (or many). A small measure of time where the Nervous System becomes still, the flow of Cerebral Spinal Fluid is slow and steady, the body is quiet, and I wait. A lot of the healing process is happening at this point. How long do I hold the Stillpoint? Until the client's response tells me to move on.

During initial Craniosacral Therapy training we are taught of a specific point to hold on the head that can bring about that stillness. Subsequent training has taught me that a Stillpoint can happen anywhere in the body, if the practitioner is really paying attention and listening. I've found this to be true through my many years of practice.

The Power in the Stillpoint

Deep relaxation with Craniosacral Therapy with Teresa Graham at Hand to Health
Take a moment to imagine if all was completely calm in your Nervous System.  Any pain it may be alerting you to in your body, or anxiety and tension that is present, is for a short time, gone. Your breath is even and your muscles relaxed. How do you think that would feel for you?

What I notice as a practitioner is that your breathing not only becomes regular but is also deeper, the areas of your body that you were holding tense, due to pain, move into a fully relaxed position. I am aware that you are very quiet, calm and seemingly peaceful. It is in that peaceful space that any struggling stops and healing, on many levels, takes place. It is an honour to be present and to quietly hold that space for you.
Your Nervous System is responsible for sending and receiving messages throughout your body. Day to day life events, dealing with past trauma and abuse, accidents, injuries or repetitive strains, etc. can cause your Nervous System to become overactive, overworked and stressed. It impacts your whole being mind, body and spirit.

I don't know where that Stillpoint will be present for you until it shows itself during your session, but I do know that it will show up. In 29+ years of practice it always has and many times there can be more than one. It may change from session to session as you move through the onion layers of healing physically, mentally and emotionally, but it will show up.

The Power in the Stillpoint is the calming of the Nervous System. Clients will finish their session feeling less pain, calmer within and peaceful. I always tell clients that the session was just a starting point and that through the next few days the process of unwinding from a stressed Nervous System will continue.

Supporting Your Nervous System after the Craniosacral Session

Online Yin Yoga with Teresa at Hand to Health
There are a  number of activities that you can take part in on your own to support the process of calming and unwinding what has started during your session. Anything that brings calm to your Parasympathetic Nervous System and your Vagus Nerve will support the work you've begun. This can include:

  • Regular Exercise ~ that feels good to you
  • Deep Breathing
  • Yoga ~ especially Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Quiet Music
  • Spending time in Nature
  • Time spent with good Friends
  • Aromatherapy using calming Essential Oils
