Peace and calm may help to regulate one person’s nervous system but may cause another extreme stress, at first. When I google search “How to make the Nervous System feel safe?” the answers are similar. Breathe deeply and be calm. For some that is not possible, at first. At least that has been my experience with sharing Craniosacral Therapy. Some clients are able to slide into deep relaxation and find their peaceful centre quickly, while others just don’t. For some their relaxation or grounding point is more found in chaos and excitement. Trying to bring them into Stillpoint likely won’t happen, at first. I realize that their Nervous System is not in a place where it is feeling safe, yet. And this is the important step in meeting a person where they are. We are all products of the environment we grew up in. We are shaped by our life experiences. The nervous system has memory and has often been holding vigil in sympathetic mode (fight or flight), staying alert, switched on, surviving. It does not mean that there is anything wrong with you, it means that your nervous system has been doing its job, keeping you safe. When it comes to Craniosacral Therapy it’s time for both you and I to listen to a nervous system that is asking to be understood and addressed where it is at. In that space of understanding and allowing, rather than forcing, change is more likely to happen. If we work together to meet your nervous system where it is at and take the time to share new possibilities, where peace, calm and relaxation begin to feel more normal, feel safe, your nervous system will begin to shift. That shift will take as long as it takes, but if we both are patient, listening and allow, your wise body will show clearly where it needs my hands to be to assist in bringing about the changes it is seeking. If that touch repeatedly feels safe to your nervous system it will begin to respond and move closer to parasympathetic mode (rest and digest). With patience, acceptance and consistency, your nervous system can learn a new way of responding. As your system relaxes my hands will be guided to those physical spaces that are holding onto the tension from bracing and protecting for so long. With gentle Craniosacral Therapy techniques those spaces can be encouraged to release, allow the fascia to unwind, the muscles to relax, the feel good hormones to flow, the pain to ease, the fluids that bathe and feed the brain and spinal cord to increase in production and flow. Craniosacral Therapy focuses on health rather than symptoms and allows the body’s innate healing intelligence (or internal physician) to guide the session.
