A Holistic Approach to Burn Out

Holistic Approach to Burn Out at Hand to HealthBurn out is a state of complete exhaustion
When you are experiencing long term, unrelenting and constant stress the result can be what is called "Burn Out". Burnout is a state of complete physical, mental and emotional exhaustion.

How do you know if you're experiencing  Burn Out? It is often associated with:
  • experiencing aches and pains all over and your not really sure why
  • despite having rested or slept really well you're continually exhausted physically and/or mentally, or you're not sleeping well
  • you've lost interest in things that normally inspire you such as your work, personal relationships, creative hobbies, etc.
  • daily tasks that are normal to you seem to be overwhelming and provoke anxiety about completing them
  • you're experiencing headaches (especially migraines) more often
  • life feels out of control and overwhelming and you see no way to regain your control
  • you experience an excessive release of stress hormones such as cortisol
  • digestive issues, acid reflux and stomach upset happen more often

Massage Therapy encourages you to get out of your head and present in your physical body. It helps to create better body awareness of the muscles that you are tensing and holding tight (such as muscles pulling your shoulders up towards your ears, rounded and hunched shoulders...) The most important first step is when you realize that you are burned out, or nearing that phase, and recognize that you need to make changes. That voice in your head that says you don't have time needs to be ignored for you own well-being. 

Next step would be to explore ways in which the Burn Out is affecting you physically, emotionally and mentally and reach out to professionals to help you through it. Your health care provider may be the best resource and place to start.

Once you begin to work through the Burn Out phase you being the healing process to recapturing a life that nurtures your being.
